So, Colin likes his Kindle, but I’m not so enamoured with it myself.

Kindle

What I like:

It’s small and light and easy to carry (although not in a pocket)

Content is very accessible through 3G or WiFi

There is plenty of content available

Text to speech is impressive

What I don’t like:

The reading screen is not that bright, maybe it’s a personal thing, but I want to make it brighter

It’s not easy or pleasing to grip

Turning the pages seems very slow compared to the iPhone app and the buttons for page turning are not very nice to press (bear in mind you will be doing this a lot)

The other buttons including the keyboard are illogically laid out and not nice to press

The additional content such as newspapers and blogs is not very rich (few images etc) and expensive

The home screen is likely to get cluttered once you have a few items. It doesn’t even organise them into Books, Newspapers etc

The manual mentions audiobooks and the Kindle 3 has a headphone jack, but I cannot find any in the UK store.

You have to buy a case, screen protector etc separately

The touch of the plastic in your hand is not great

My main gripe is that I like one device that can do most things, and I have fairly random thought patterns, so halfway through a page I’ll think, right let’s check the weather or send an e-mail, but of course it’s not a mobile phone. My brain thinks it’s a mobile but it’s not!!

Perhaps I need an iPad…

Although I cannot validate this with facts, I have recently been contacted by a number of clients whose machines have been taken over and rendered useless by a Trojan in the form of scareware – software that purports to be security software but is in fact designed to get you to enter credit card details.

Never give card details out to sites you do not know. Always maintain a good virus checker and always be wary of email attachments even if they are from people you know.

It takes on average 2 hours to clean an infected system and if you’re not one of the lucky ones you could lose it all.

Today I discovered a much-used file had somehow reverted to an older version from about a year ago. I use a lot of file syncing (SugarSync) and it probably got mixed up somehow. Luckily Jungle Disk saved the day, I just went into my backup vault and restored a version of the file from a few weeks ago. File versioning is very important in a backup solution, and Jungle Disk seems to be very good so far.
