I mentioned on Tuesday how Cynthia Crawford, Baroness Thatcher’s personal assistant when she was in office, maintained that her boss was a Bell’s woman, while Jerry Hayes, the former Tory MP, was adamant her favourite whisky was J&B. Now, Steve Cattell, her security boss on her VC10, says they are both wrong.

“My role when airborne was non existent, so I ran the bar for the forward cabin,” he says. “I can tell you that Mrs Thatcher’s preferred drink was Chivas Regal and water (which she only had as a night cap on overnight flights) and Denis’s was Gin and Italian, which he had whenever he wanted.”

He added that Mrs Thatcher would never allow herself – or her civil servants – to drink while working. One, who asked for a G  & T, was told by her that he would have an orange juice until they had finished.
